What Is IFTA?
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a cooperative agreement among 48 US states and 10 Canadian provinces that simplifies fuel tax reporting for commercial motor vehicles operating across multiple jurisdictions.
Who Needs to File IFTA?
- Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds
- Has three or more axles regardless of weight
- Is used in combination with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds

MPG = Total Miles ÷ Total Gallons

Gallons Consumed = Miles in State ÷ Fleet MPG

Tax Owed = (Gallons Consumed - Gallons Purchased) × State Tax Rate
